Education Management Corporation spokesperson Jacquelyn Muller told City Paper this morning that “there have been no layoffs announced” at the for-profit education company.

In a written statement, Muller says the company “has begun an evaluation of the operations in an effort to better position the organization for success within the current economic and changing regulatory environments.” Although the statement allows, and Muller confirmed in a brief discussion, that there is the “possibility of some staff reductions.”
CP first reported Tuesday that employees at EDMC’s online division were told not only about the evaluations, but also that layoffs would be happening and that the notification of those staff reductions would come by Friday. Several employees, who asked not to be identified, verified the news Tuesday and some say they were even told that their jobs were safe.
When asked if layoffs were imminent, even though the number and extent of staff reductions weren’t announced Tuesday, Muller referred back to the written statement, which appears in its entirety below. The potential shakeup at EDMC was also reported this morning in a brief story from the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, which relied mostly on EDMC’s official statement.

And while the company this morning is referring to the layoffs as “possible” there is other evidence to suggest that staff reductions are likely.

On Tuesday evening we reported on an internal memo sent to employees from John Kline, the president of EDMC’s online division. While Kline’s memo does use the verbiage “possibility of reducing the number of staff,” it also sets somewhat of a timetable for completing the evaluations.

“This will be an extensive and deliberative process with every effort made to carefully consider the needs of our students and the complexity of our organization,” Kline writes. “This process is expected to conclude within the week, and I will keep you updated regarding the outcomes of this process.”

As for EDMC employees, those contacted by City Paper are sticking by their guns that the “possible” layoffs are definite and they’re still looking at Friday as decision day. We’ll have more on this story as it develops.

Statement from EDMC spokesperson Jacquelyn Muller:

Education Management Corporation (EDMC) announced to employees at its Online Higher Education operations yesterday that it has begun an evaluation of the operations in an effort to better position the organization for success within the current economic and changing regulatory environments. This evaluation will include careful consideration of all options, including the possibility of some staff reductions.
Although the Company continues to experience a demand for its academic programs, like most colleges and universities a number of factors such as the economy and a changing regulatory landscape have contributed to the need for this review.

We will continue to evaluate all aspects of the business in order to focus its resources as efficiently and effectively as possible to provide fully online students with an excellent education and high quality outcomes. We will continue to invest more broadly in academic quality initiatives and in the innovative delivery of higher education to better serve the needs of our students.

  1. “Possible” layoffs? Then what’s the reason for the delivery of several hundred moving boxes today? Don’t insult us. We know layoffs are going to happen.

  2. Anybody that is surprised by this has not been following the news the last few years. I left EDMC 6 months ago largely because I knew something like this was coming soon.

  3. If you’re laid off from EDMC join us – the people who EDMC has targeted, profited from, and had you lie to. We won’t condemn you for working for those profiteers who are focused solely on profit and consider education a collateral benefit for the few that are successful. We are working to shut down these for-profits, these profiteers, these sociopathic financial pirates. We feel sorry that you lost or are about to loose your job but you must understand EDMC has made millions upon millions off of lies, violations of laws (in both the spirit of said laws and their practical application), they’ve stolen their fortune and left the targets of their scheme holding huge bills with no practical way to pay them and no means of escaping from them.

Again – we are sorry you’re loosing your jobs but you’ve been working for sociopaths that only care about money and they’ve used you to take it from us. Join us – take documents that show the crimes they’ve committed, give those documents to the government, the lawyers at Justice, to Sen. Tom Harkin and help us get justice from these monsters.

  4. This is pure and utter bullshit. You give people 3 fucking days..and play the waiting game with “Oh stanby we’ll let you know something friday, untill then back to work drones”

  5. I hope I am one of lucky ones who get laid off. At least I can collect unemployment and get away from this deceptive, immoral company. They harass their employees, lie to their students and steal from the government.

  6. My spouse works there. I am so glad that I didn’t take a position there too. I hate everything I’m hearing in the lawsuit and now this. Especially when my spouse is someone who actually pushed back when his supervisor would tell him to just enroll someone (without giving thought to the details and determining if enrolling someone was in their best interest based on the situation). This sickens me. For the sake of our children, I am hoping he is not in the lay off group, at least until he can find another job. This is really sad. Expect people to work normally after telling them they MAY lose their only source of income. EDMC, I HATE you for doing that to my husband.

  7. That’s right…we were told about probable layoffs early this week and then it was “demanded” that we stay positive and make sure the students are not effected by the news. I said one “not so positive thing” to another employee and was “written up” for being one minute late to work. This company deserves to go under. They are a wart on the surface of a decent, moral, and honest society. They have been deceiving people for too long and stealing government money by deceptively enrolling students who have no chance of academic success.

  8. It’s REAL UGLY right now. A slaugther on 14th Street. Lotta cryin. Extra security. Some folks may not take this well and attempt violence

  9. This is the biggest bullshit I’ve ever heard! They just started walking people out of South University. 26 people from Argosy. EDMC LIES.

  10. Layoffs are part of the corporate structure; if you did lose your position then it may be a good thing for you. Apparently you deserved to be let go, besides if you are that unhappy working at EDMC then you should be glad to collect their unemployment benefits. Remember you can only “rep want you sow”

  11. Happily employed…your an idiot. First..learn to spell. Second if we deserved to be let go it wouldn’t have been during a lay off. I watched many very good reps with very good numbers walked out of South University today. Its employee sheeple like yourself that make companys corrupt.

  12. The sad fact is working at EDMC, for any of their sham schools, is going to be a black mark on your resume and your professional reputation.

I would not hire someone who worked in admissions there and I have heard from quite a few friends who are in hiring capacities w/ PGH companies that they too would shy away from anyone w/ work experience from an EDMC property.

  13. People won’t hire a salesperson because they’ve worked for EDMC? Wow, that’s hard to believe.

There’s always good jobs for good salespeople.

Those people are losing their jobs because of the federal government coming down on the company.

  14. EDMC Survivor who claims to be happily employed. Please don’t call anyone out for not knowing how to spell. It’s actually, “you’re an idiot” not “your”. You’ve been served.

Best of luck to those who were laid off.

  15. I’d like to add to the message below. It’s “make companies corrupt” not “companys.” SLAM!

  16. Dear Butt Head EDMC Survivor who claims to be happily employed. I would advise you to buy a Webster’s Dictionary & learn how to spell “YOU’RE the real IDIOT” Don’t try to call out any ones option & try to slam them when you find it hard to express yourself. I can only wonder what you say or do with the students you work with. Perhaps the EDMC management missed your qualifications & somehow you survived the lay-off.
    Here’s your sign!

  17. EDMC, OHE, is a company that lives by the philosophy that, continuing to berate their employees is commonplace, and should be expected by employees from their “Directors”.
“Director”, what a joke. Most of the people who are in the role of “Director”, are people who couldn’t make it as ADA’s.
I worked in that cruel environment for the last 3+ years and For the last season +, I have been on the TOP of the “Stacked Rankings”. The other day my boss showed me a piece of paper with everyone on our team, and the number of students each of us started for this last 3 starts. I had 4, 3 and 2 for these “3” January starts, and 1 already for February 9. No-one else was even close but yet here I am “JOBLESS”, along with 4 other people on my “Team”. Nice for my “Director” to show up today to show his support for all of us, he was a NO SHOW. To say that EDMC sucks is an understatement! Please see email sent by John Kline stating “he is there to take care of students and employees, both at work and out of work. Well, here I am John, Out of Work. Thanks. I haven’t felt such relief in AGES. Here’s wishing you, Todd, Carla, Jake Kristin and the rest of the spineless idiots there, Many Sleepless Nights and “ZERO” Job Security! PS..
“What Goes Around, Comes back Around”! Always!

  18. To the people calling out “edmc survivor”, he didn’t claim to be happily employed. A user by the name below him is named “happily employed”. Edmc survivor is actually defending you against that user’s comments. Reading comprehension is an important skill.

  19. Thank you neutral edmc employee for your clarification! And to all that are slamming me..my spelling is correct..its the grammar you have issues with. So quit it. I’m defending US as the employee and condemming what the company has done.
There was absolutly no rhyme or reason for the people that they had laid off. Poor performance employees that had been here less than 6 months..and uber performing employee’s that had been here 2+yrs alike were laid off. The middle of the road employees with 1yr more or less that were just making the expected 2 apps per week were also let go…just no sense in the whole thing. Its sad and those of us that remain are saddened to see our friends leave.

  20. Stop whining! Millions of Americans are laid off.its the business world, it’s called cut backs! I’m sorry for your misfortune but you all sound like immature assholes. Pick yourself up, stop the bitterness and go get another job. However you need to take a good look in the mirror. Certain people are let go for specific reasons. Performance, attitude, work ethic, I could name more but I think you get it!

  21. “My spelling is correct..its the grammar you have issues with. So quit it.”

    You’re a moron.

  22. EDMC is the “firing-est” company I have ever worked for. Every month, new layoffs, new firings, new “re-alignments” are announced. From the day I first started working there (about five years ago), the recurrent threat was, “Do this or you’ll be fired” … even before there was any thought by anyone not to do “this.”
