Never too late: Julia Roberts and Tom Hanks

The titular fellow (played by Hanks) counters an ignoble work dismissal by enrolling in community college. There, Larry discovers a gift for economics; becomes the make-over darling of the scooter set; and strikes a few sparks with his speech teacher (Julia Roberts). Nia Vardalos (My Big Fat Greek Wedding) co-wrote Larry with Hanks. Its characterizations fall between bland and predictable (it doesn’t help that TV’s Community has mined much of its turf), and any charm it offers is borne on the backs of two of America’s most-beloved stars, Hanks and Roberts. You’ll never believe for a minute that they’re anybody but Hanks and Roberts, here delivering their signature styles with no sweat — but I guess that’s why we love ’em.

  1. Yes, it’s predictable, but still a pleasant, though somewhat disappointing flick. The beginning was ho, hum but seems to become more dramatic and satisfying toward the end. Elicits some emotion, with good acting at the end. Overall, I would recommend it to older folks. Teens and younger adults will be disappointed. I still love seeing Julia and Tom on the screen.
