40 brand new bikes were off loaded into the parking lot of the Promise Center in Homewood on May 9, during the “Learn to Ride Safely” event as kids waited patiently inside. Local firefighters, University of Pittsburgh staff, Mayor Gainey and other officials joined in presenting the bikes and helping kids adjust their new helmets. The Promise center debuted a hands-on traffic safety program along with a traffic garden to simulate real-world biking situations. Lytia Brock, director of community engagement and development for Promise Center said, “We know that a few kids have actually passed away by being hit by cars, and just want to make sure they are more aware of being safe while riding the bikes.” The new bikes built by University of Pittsburgh student athletes will stay on site at the Promise Center for kids to practice bike safety on the track donated and installed by EverLine Coatings.
