Demonstrators temporarily blocked parts of Penn Avenue and 16th Street  earlier today to protest a traffic collision that left a bicyclist in critical condition 12 days prior.

Around two dozen cyclists and supporters led by Pgh Bike Jam showed up to the Feb. 28 protest held near the location of the accident. Event organizers say the victim’s condition is still unclear.

Eric Boerer, Bike Pittsburgh’s advocacy director, tells Pittsburgh City Paper that advocates are frustrated because they’ve been pushing for years to make this section of the city safer for bicyclists.

“We’ve long been advocating for a safe connection to and through the Strip District,” Boerer tells City Paper. “There’s been talk of creating this connection since the City first installed the Penn Ave bike lane about a decade ago, and we feel that making sure it’s safe to bike here will benefit residents, businesses, employees, and visitors.”
