Seventeen demonstrators arrested Downtown May 30 while protesting increased health-care costs for University of Pittsburgh employees pleaded guilty to obstructing traffic and were ordered to pay fines and court costs of $135 each. But the June 9 court appearance wasn’t the end for the protesters or for Local 585 of the Service Employees International Union, which represents about 400 cleaners, groundskeepers and maintenance people at Pitt: On June 13, the union plans an 8:30 a.m. demonstration at the State Office Building, Downtown, asking state government to take action on rising health-care costs statewide and specifically on Pitt’s planned increases, which the union says could force hundreds of workers to drop health coverage.
