Local band Short Fictions’ latest single, “Really Like You,” tells a story to which we can all relate. Vocalist Sam Treber chronicles the anxiety that comes along with having a crush, like, really, really liking someone. So much so, sings Treber, that he “get[s] fucked up for weeks” after seeing his wannabe SO in the street.
The lyrics, in combination with its succinct running time, fun bells, ample cymbal hits, and bright guitar playing make the first single off of the band’s upcoming album, Fates Worth Than Death, one of those tracks that must be played again when the final note hits.
But this light-hearted song is an outlier from the rest of the album, which tackles social issues like global warming and gentrification, easily spotted in song titles like “Cities Underwater,” “Living In Places Like These Can Be Bad For Your Health,” and “Fates Worse Than Death Pt II: Anthropocene.”
Look out for Short Fiction’s most calculated and focused work yet in December when Fates Worth than Death drops via Acrobat Unstable Records. In the meantime, have a little fun with “Really Like You.”
