Mal Blum on stage at Mr. Smalls Theatre on Tue., Aug. 13, 2019 Credit: CP photo: Erin Allport

Mal Blum may have sounded a lot different during yesterday’s performance at Mr. Smalls Theatre than they did during their February 2018 stop in Pittsburgh.

When Blum self-released their 2010 album, Every Time You Go Somewhere, it was acoustic-pop leaning, peppered with the harmonica and violin. Their 2016 release, You Look a Lot Like Me, moved into the punk-folk realm. But on Blum’s latest album, Pity Boy, they’ve taken the plunge to create a powerful punk-pop collection, where Blum is the most open to date about their sexuality and experience as a transgender human.

Last night, attendees heard Blum’s thoughts and perceptions, along with openers Counterfeit Madison and Calyx. Here are photographer Erin Allport’s favorite images from the show.
