This evening local leaders and TransYOUniting gathered outside of UPMC’s headquarters in downtown Pittsburgh to protest the hospital for implementing restrictions on trans health care complying with the Trump administration’s executive orders. Local trans leaders such as Dena Stanley, Kaiah Scott, Maria Montano and Jule Arney joined Mayor Ed Gainey and Rep. La’Tasha Mayes in delivering a letter to UPMC’s CEO and board of directors demanding that they deny President Trump’s orders and restore gender affirming care for all trans people in Pittsburgh. Pittsburgh resident Cori Fraser told the story of how their child, Salem was denied gender affirming surgery since they are 18. The executive order states that surgeons can only operate if the patient is 19 years of age or older so Salem will have to wait three more months to have top surgery. Fraser said that “gender affirming health care is lifesaving health care,” and that “Salem can wait three months, but for some kids, it’s years.”
